With the three demands of implementing 33 percent women‟s reservation immediately, providing relief from crippling inflation, and ensuring the safety of women, the All India Mahila Congress organized the ‘Nari Nyay Andolan’ at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, under the leadership of AIMC President Ms. Alka Lamba. Thousands of women from across the country participated in the event. The crowd at Jantar Mantar was so large that the Delhi Police, by setting up barricades at various locations, stopped the buses bringing women to the movement. The police then brutally arrested the protesting women, including Alka Lamba and other leaders, dragging them on the ground and using excessive force, resulting in injuries to many women workers.
When the protesting Congress workers attempted to deliver a memorandum to the President regarding their three demands, the police intervened, arresting them after a scuffle.
AIMC President, Ms. Alka Lamba, condemned the Modi Government‟s efforts to suppress the movement. She stated that until women‟s reservation is implemented immediately and justice is achieved for women, the Mahila Congress will continue to challenge the government from the streets to Parliament.
After the demonstration at Jantar Mantar, the women Congress workers took out a candle march at India Gate to fulfill their demands.
